「男爵（だんしゃく）イモ」の生みの親として知られる川田龍吉男爵（1856-1951年）は、近代農業を実践するため、道南の北斗市に試験農場をつくり、アメリカからさまざまな農機具や農業資材を輸入しました。
大正13年に建てられたキング式牛舎は、今は「男爵資料館」として生まれ変わり、そこには川田男爵が輸入して使った農機具がたくさん展示されています（http://www15.plala.or.jp/dansyakuimo/）。
その資料館で注目したいのは、「牛床」です。
なんと「木（もく）レンガ」なのです。
そしてそこには、「牛の爪を保護するために、畜房の床一面に敷き詰められていた。素材はカリフォルニア産のダグラスファーを使用。ダグラスファーは日本の杉と松のほぼ中間の硬さを持ち、松脂成分が多く、腐食しにくい」と解説されています。
牛の護蹄を考慮した牛床素材。
昔から、ちゃんと考えられていたんですね。
